Identifying freshwater ecosystems of national importance for biodiversity
نویسندگان
چکیده
Cover: A highly natural brown-water stream on Stewart Island, showing intact riparian linkages and a diversity of in-stream habitat. Importance sub-project of The Sustainable Development Programme of Action for Freshwater (or 'Water Programme of Action'). It is a working draft that presents a proposed methodology and a preliminary list of candidate rivers of national importance based on their biodiversity values. This list needs to be further refined, firstly because some data quality and systems problems could not be resolved within reporting time frames; and secondly following the public consultation and peer review during 2005. The report does not define waters of regional or local importance, so should not be interpreted at those scales. The authors should be consulted prior to formal citation of, or reliance on, this report.

An overview of the status, trends and challenges of freshwater fish research and conservation in Malaysia
Freshwater fish biodiversity is a precious natural asset in terms of economic, cultural and scientific interest. And yet, the inland freshwater ecosystem in Malaysia is declining at a far greater rate than terrestrial ecosystems in the tropics. What happened, and what is being done to address the crisis? This paper extracts findings from the latest literature and explores overarching issues per...
متن کاملThreats and opportunities for freshwater conservation under future land use change scenarios in the United States.
Freshwater ecosystems provide vital resources for humans and support high levels of biodiversity, yet are severely threatened throughout the world. The expansion of human land uses, such as urban and crop cover, typically degrades water quality and reduces freshwater biodiversity, thereby jeopardizing both biodiversity and ecosystem services. Identifying and mitigating future threats to freshwa...
متن کاملIDENTIFYING PRIORITY SITES FOR THE CONSERVATION OF FRESHWATER FISH BIODIVERSITY IN A MEDITERRANEAN BASIN WITH A HIGH DEGREE OF THREATENED ENDEMICS. Hermoso,
The Guadiana River basin’s freshwater fish species richness and its threatened status in the circum-mediterranean context highlights the need for a large scale study to identify priority areas for their conservation. One of the most common problems in conservation planning is the quantification of a site’s relative value for the conservation of local biodiversity. Here we used a two-tiered asse...
متن کاملDiversity of Plants and Animals in Mountain Ecosystems in Tajikistan
Tajikistan is a hotspot of plant and animal species diversity and endemism andis important for the conservation of biodiversity on a global scale. The country is located ata biological crossroads. Species from Central and Northern Europe, Central Asia, theMiddle East, and North Africa mingle here with endemics found nowhere else. Therichness of Tajikistan‘s biodiversity shows up at the genetic,...
متن کاملGlobal biodiversity scenarios for the year 2100.
Scenarios of changes in biodiversity for the year 2100 can now be developed based on scenarios of changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide, climate, vegetation, and land use and the known sensitivity of biodiversity to these changes. This study identified a ranking of the importance of drivers of change, a ranking of the biomes with respect to expected changes, and the major sources of uncertainti...
